In Memoriam – Very Rev. P. O. Ninan (March 26, 1934 - July 29, 2022)

In Memoriam – Very Rev. P. O. Ninan (March 26, 1934 - July 29, 2022)

Very Rev. P. O. Ninan (88), senior presbyter of the CSI Madhya Kerala Diocese and pioneer missionary of Andhra Mission (now Telangana Mission), was called home by his heavenly father on July 29, 2022.

During the Holy Communion Service on Sunday, 31st July, the CSI Parish (Malayalam) Dubai paid their respects to Rev. P. O. Ninan. Our Vicar, Rev. Shaji Jacob Thomas,  recollected his association with P. O. Ninan Achen during the former's tenure as General Secretary of Scripture Union and CSSM, and later at Mallappally (2011-17).

Very Rev. P. O. Ninan was born on March 26, 1934 and was a member of the Holy Immanuel CSI Church, Mallappally. Achen was a great spiritual leader and worked tirelessly toward the development of society. His contributions to the growth of the CSI Youth Movement will be remembered always. Pastoral care was truly his calling. He is an alumnus of Union Biblical Seminary, United Theological College Bangalore, and Southern Methodist University, USA. He got his Deacon ordination in 1963 and Presbyter ordination in 1964. Achen served in the parishes of Njakkanal, Ayyappancovil, Peerumedu, Pannimmattom, Mavelikkara, CSI Cathedral Kottayam, and Tholasserry.

P.O. Ninan Achen and Dr. Nancy Ninan Kochamma were appointed as the pioneer missionaries of CSI Andhra Mission in the year 1967, centered in Mogullapally. They came there with their two kids. Being a rural village with no medical facilities, Nancy Kochamma saw the suffering of the people living around her and eventually founded CSI Mission Homoeopathy Hospital for providing medical care to them. In 1968, their second child Nirmala was critically ill and died there when she was only one and half years old. In spite of this tragic incident, Achen and Kochamma remained there for another 17 years, first in Mogullapally and later in Parkal, before they came back to Kerala. Nirmala English Medium School was started in memory of their late daughter.

Dr. Nancy Ninan passed away on 25th October 2016 at the age of 79. Rev. P. O. Ninan is survived by his children Dr. Neena Soni, Nissy Mani, Dr. Oommen P. Ninan, and Dr. Grace Nisha Binju.

We pray for everyone who knew and loved Rev. P. O. Ninan. His guiding spirit, faithfulness, and unconditional love for others will forever be with us all.
