The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10)
Malayalam Class

The CSI Parish (Malayalam) Dubai conducts weekly Malayalam classes to provide an opportunity for our members to teach and learn our Mother tongue. This helps our members, especially the younger generation, to get more actively involved in our Malayalam Worship services.

The segment “Sadchintha” (Good Thought) is a main highlight of our Malayalam class which introduces inspiring glimpses from lives of great personalities and incidents from history. Another segment “Vijnanakeralam” (Knowledge of Kerala) is a popular one among the Malayalam learners, focusing on the rich cultural heritage of Kerala, God’s Own Country.

The Malayalam classes are split based on age groups of learners with customized curriculum suiting each group and using latest technology and devices to deliver the lessons.

Benjamin Bailey

Benjamin Bailey, a British Church Mission Society missionary holds a prominent position in the cultural history of Kerala. Through him, we received our first Malayalam Bible and Dictionary. Being a foreigner, he learned Malayalam language and developed types and constructed a wooden printing press with the help of local silversmiths. Rev. Bailey, moulded the round and sleek Malayalam types making use of indigenous know-how, and is considered the first Malayalam typographer. No doubt, he is a true inspiration for us to learn our Mother tongue.

He established the first printing press (the Kottayam CMS press) and started printing in Malayalam in Kerala. Benjamin Bailey was the founder of both Malayalam printing and book publishing. The CMS press established in 1821 at Kottayam was both the first printing and publishing establishment.

Benjamin Bailey translated the whole of the Bible and the Common Prayer into Malayalam and printed them. The ‘Bailey Bible’ helped in formulating the modern Malayalam prose just as the King James Version helped in the development of the English language

Benjamin Bailey was the first lexicographer in Malayalam. He compiled, printed and published two dictionaries: ‘A Dictionary of High and Colloquial Malayalim and English (1846, Malayalam-English Dictionary), and, ‘A Dictionary, English and Malayalim’ (1849, English-Malayalam).

Benjamin Bailey was also the first Principal of the first College in India-the ‘Kottayam College’ of CMS (CMS College, Kottayam).
